Start here
Three and a half minutes on how we go through your chart together, and what you walk away with.
Sound familiar?
You walked out of the appointment with a plan, a calendar, and a folder of papers. Somewhere between the exam room and the car, most of what you heard slipped away. That night, with the house quiet and your laptop open, the questions came back louder.
None of this means your care is lacking, or that you are not smart enough to follow it. It means the most important explanation of your life happened in about twenty minutes, on one of the hardest days you have ever had. I watched it happen in my own exam room, with my own patients, more times than I would like to count.
The explanation has to happen a second time, somewhere quieter, at your own pace, with room to stop and go back.
"What if I make the wrong decision?"
"How will I manage my side effects from treatment?"
"What will my life look like a year from now?"
Wherever you are right now
Newly diagnosed
Tests, appointments, and decisions are stacking up faster than you can absorb them. You want to understand what is happening before you are asked to choose.
In treatment
You are in the middle of it. You want to understand the plan you are on, what your side effects mean, and what to raise with your team at the next visit.
After treatment
Active treatment is over, and the next chapter feels less mapped than the last one. You want to understand what follow-up looks like and what to keep track of.
What we do together
Understanding always comes first, because you cannot take control of something you do not yet understand.
Understand
Your diagnosis, in words you can hold onto.
Pathology reports, test results, and medical terms, translated so you have a clear picture of what is happening in your body.
The reasoning behind your plan.
What each recommended treatment is for, what it is meant to accomplish, and why it fits your situation.
Organize
Side effects and symptoms, sorted.
What you are experiencing, what it may mean, and which questions to bring to your treating physicians.
The questions that apply to you.
Depending on your situation, that may include genetic testing, fertility preservation, or treatment-related menopause.
Take Control
What comes next.
What to expect in the coming weeks and months, and what to keep track of along the way.
Your next appointment, prepared.
You leave with the questions that matter most for your situation, ready to take part in every decision as the CEO of your cancer care.
The goal is not more information. You already have plenty of that. The goal is understanding what matters most for you, and knowing what to discuss next.
Apply for a ConsultationWhat this is, and what it is not
No single conversation can choose your treatment or guarantee how things will turn out, and you should be suspicious of anyone who claims it can. This consultation does not replace your oncologist, and it does not create a new treatment plan. It has a much simpler job: to make sure you are never a stranger in your own medical story, so that when you go back to your team, you are more prepared and more confident in your care.
If you are a physician reading this: this consultation is designed to send your patient back to you better prepared, with clearer questions and a firmer grasp of the plan you recommended.
In their words
"Right out of the box, I felt like I mattered, my cancer mattered and getting answers mattered.
I was blown away by Dr. Troso's communication skills, expertise and professionalism. We reviewed, in detail, my medical records, and she explained everything from my diagnosis to where I stand now, as a survivor. Most of my questions were answered before I even had to ask them!
I cannot explain the sense of relief I felt after our call was over. Reaching out to Dr. Troso was one of the smartest decisions I made this year, and I cannot recommend her highly enough!"
"Meeting Dr. Troso at the most difficult time of my life was fortunate for me. She made me feel that I was being cared for and supported by a very knowledgeable and brilliant doctor. She was kind, compassionate and totally in charge. I knew I was in good hands."
"I learned early on from Dr. Troso that the cancer journey outside of the hospital is just as important and difficult as the medical treatment. The mental battle, the emotional ups and downs, they're sometimes the hardest part, and we're often left to manage it alone."
"I am also so grateful for Dr. Troso, who has taught me how to advocate for myself and be an informed patient."
Meet Dr. Troso
For more than 25 years at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, I cared for women with breast and gynecologic cancers. I always explained carefully, and I drew pictures. And still, I watched brilliant, capable women nod along on the hardest day of their lives, knowing most of it would not survive the drive home.
That is why I wrote Calming The Cancer Chaos: An Oncologist's Guide for Women to Understand, Organize, and Take Control of Their Cancer Care, and why I host The Empowered Cancer Patient podcast. This consultation is the most personal version of that work: seventy-five minutes, your chart, your questions.
I left the clinic. I did not leave the field. I keep my board certification in medical oncology current, and I attend the major cancer meetings every year (ASCO, the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, and SGO), so what I explain to you reflects what your oncologist is working from today.

Meet privately with Dr. Troso
Seventy-five minutes, virtual, focused entirely on you. You leave with a clearer understanding of your care and the questions to bring to your treating team.
Questions
No. Your oncology team treats your cancer and makes treatment decisions with you. This consultation helps you understand your care, so you can take a fuller part in those decisions.
No. That choice belongs to you and your treating team. What she does provide is the explanation underneath that choice: what your diagnosis and pathology actually mean, why each option is on the table and what it is meant to accomplish, what the side effects of each one look like and how they are usually managed, which tests or questions may apply to your situation, and what to expect as treatment moves forward. You leave able to weigh the options with your team rather than simply accept them.
No. A formal second opinion is a medical evaluation by a treating physician. This is an educational consultation focused on understanding your diagnosis, your plan, and your next steps.
Because Dr. Troso takes only three to four consultations each week, and not every situation is a fit for this format. The application takes a few minutes. She reads it herself and confirms the consultation will be useful to you before you are asked to schedule or pay anything.
Your patient portal login (MyChart or your hospital's equivalent), so you can open your chart during the call and go through it with Dr. Troso in real time. A written list of your questions helps too. If you would rather send records ahead of time (pathology reports, imaging reports, visit notes, your treatment plan), she reviews them before you meet. Nothing is required in advance.
Yes. You are welcome to include one person who helps with your care.
Apply and tell us where you are. We confirm fit before anything is scheduled or paid.
